Why is coal crushed up in a coal powered station?

In a coal-powered station, coal is crushed into fine particles for several important reasons:

  1. Increased Surface Area: Crushing the coal increases its surface area, which allows for more efficient and complete combustion. This means that the coal burns more thoroughly, producing more energy and less waste.

  2. Improved Combustion Efficiency: Smaller coal particles mix better with air in the combustion chamber, leading to improved fuel-to-air ratio and more uniform combustion. This results in higher thermal efficiency and more consistent heat generation.

  3. Enhanced Boiler Performance: Crushed coal enhances the performance of the boilers. It helps in maintaining the correct temperature and pressure within the boiler, facilitating better heat exchange and steam production.

  4. Reduction of Ash and Emissions: Proper combustion of finely crushed coal minimizes the production of unburned carbon (ash) and limits the emission of pollutants. This contributes to cleaner and more environmentally friendly power production.

  5. Ease of Handling and Feeding: Crushed coal is easier to handle, transport, and feed into the combustion system. It ensures a steady and controlled supply of fuel to the furnace.

In summary, crushing coal into finer particles optimizes its combustion and contributes to the efficiency, cleanliness, and reliability of coal-powered electricity generation.
