What is the role of a mill in a coal-fired power plant?

In a coal-fired power plant, the mill, also known as a pulverizer, plays a crucial role in preparing the coal for combustion. The main functions of the mill are:

  1. Grinding: It grinds the coal into a fine powder to increase the surface area, which helps the coal burn more efficiently and completely.

  2. Drying: It removes moisture from the coal, which is essential because excess moisture can lead to difficulties in combustion and lower efficiency.

  3. Classifying: It separates the fine coal particles from the coarse ones. The fine particles are transported to the boiler for combustion, while the coarse particles are returned to the mill for further grinding.

  4. Transporting: The mill blows the fine coal powder into the boiler's combustion chamber, where it is mixed with pre-heated air and burned to generate heat. This heat converts water into steam, which drives the turbines to generate electricity.
