What method of mining is used to obtain calcite?

Calcite is typically obtained through a process known as open-pit mining or quarrying. In these methods, large surface excavations are made to reach the mineral deposits. The steps usually involve:

  1. Removing overburden: This involves clearing away the soil and rock that cover the calcite deposits.
  2. Drilling and Blasting: Holes are drilled into the rock, and explosives are placed within to break up the material.
  3. Extraction: The broken rock is then extracted and transported to a processing facility.
  4. Crushing and Screening: The extracted rock is crushed and screened to achieve the desired size and purity.

Quarrying is highly effective for accessing shallow calcite deposits and is less expensive than underground mining.
