What size aggregate is used in concrete?

In concrete, the size of aggregate typically varies depending on the type of construction and the desired properties of the finished product. Commonly used aggregate sizes include:

  1. Coarse Aggregates: Typically ranging from 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) to 1.5 inches (38.1 mm) in diameter. Common sizes include:

    • 3/8 inch (9.5 mm)
    • 1/2 inch (12.7 mm)
    • 3/4 inch (19.1 mm)
    • 1 inch (25.4 mm)
  2. Fine Aggregates: Sand and smaller gravel with sizes up to 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).

The choice of aggregate size can affect the workability, strength, and durability of the concrete. For standard concrete mix, the most commonly used coarse aggregate size is usually around 3/4 inch (19.1 mm). However, for special applications such as high-strength concrete, larger aggregates may be used, whereas for thin slabs or paving such as sidewalks, smaller aggregates might be preferred.
